HITA FESTIVAL MEDIEVAL 2025

The first Medieval Theatre Festival was held in Hita (Guadalajara, Spain) in 1961, thanks to the initiative of Professor Manuel Criado de Val. As a medieval-themed festival,it is the oldest inSpain and has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The theatre performed in the ruins of the Church of San Pedro de Hita is based on a set of versions and stage adaptations of great medieval literary works. Some remarkable representations arededicated to the Archpriest's Book of Good Love, withthe main characters LadyEndrina, Don Melón, the old Trotaconventos...

The chivalric tournaments that are held in the arenaof the Villa are another of the attractions of the Festival. The knights practice the ancient training for battle by throwing spears, attacking the stafermo or taking rings with their spears. Then come the fights on foot and on horseback, with spears and swords.

The masked characters and the carnival parades are the protagonists of this festival. The "botargas" of pagan origin walk the streets of Hita with their cowbells and truncheons. They accompanythe brotherhoods of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma in the Alarde and then represent a singular combat.

The wedding of Lady Endrina and Don Melón, together with the combat of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, representations based on the Book of Good Love, are the traditional tribute of the neighbors to the Archpriest.

The day is completed with a visit to the typical caves, wineries and wineries, the artisan market, traditional gastronomy and the performances of musicians and minstrels that create a magical and mysterious atmosphere.

We are waiting for you at HITA. THE VILLA OF THE ARCHPRIEST.
